EPIPHANY (Global Cuisine Redefined)

I had been itching to try this restaurant for the past many months, but there were always a couple of snags that prevented me from doing so..... there was one time we went there for lunch and the restaurant was still closed (even if it was already 11:30am) and there was another time where major rainfall, flooding and fallen trees (along Gilmore ave) forced us to try  a different restaurant...... Last week I gave it another try and this time we were more fortunate.

We were surprised that they do not have any fixed menu here, instead we were shown this blackboard with the nights available dishes. The server told us the menu changes every week so there might be a chance that what we dined on that particular might not be the same when you make your visit..... Nonetheless, let me share with you what me and my companion ordered.

Tuna Ceviche / Coco Lime Sorbet

Veering away from the more familiar (and local version) KILAWIN which is more commonly marinated in vinegar ..... this cold dish makes use of citrus fruits (like mandarin orange, pomelo and cherry tomatoes) and sorbet for the acid. I personally like the dish because of the added sweetness coming from the fruits and it went well with the sourness of the sorbet. (and oh yeah, the raw tuna was nice and fresh too)

my companion thought the dish was ok but she's not really into raw fish ...... I think she's more familiar with our local version because the stronger acidity from the vinegar creates a chemical change on the fish so that its not completely raw.

Braised Beef Crest with Lemongrass and Thai Basil

This to me is Beef Stew presented in a more elegant manner ...... the meat is so tender and its so flavorful (and the sauce is not overly sweet). The veggie side dish is half cooked so the crispiness is retained and is actually a good balance with the meatiness of the beef.

Brined Porkchop / Mashed Potatoes / Mushroom Duxelle

We took around 10 to 15 minutes slowly savoring the delicious beef dish that I almost forgot we still had a porkchop dish to feast on. So here I was thinking that with all that time that the pork was resting in our table, we might end up with a piece of dry porkchop. I bravelt took hold of my fork and knife and I cut a small slice of the meat (hey its still very tender) I added some more of the mushroom sauce and a few strings of the beansprouts and then I took that first bite........my companion was eagerly waiting for my reaction so I looked her in the eye and confidently told her that she is going to love this dish.

This for me is SO FAR the best pork chop dish I had tasted ...... the meat is still moist and so tender, the mushroom sauce is so delicious, the mashed potatoes underneath the porkchop is creamy but retains some lumpiness (just the way I like my mashed potatoes) and they added a strong hint of horse radish (or wasabi) which I think went really well with the potatoes.

Probably the very minor issue for me would be the greens as it had a slight bitter aftertaste. (some will like it, some won't)

Fried Brioche / Chocolate & Coffee Ganache & Coco Creme Anglaisse

After partaking of a cold dish and 2 somewhat heavy meat dishes, our stomachs were almost ready to call it a night. But since their menu had only one dessert listed for the evening, we thought we'd go all out and hope that the streak (of good food) doesn't end with the main courses.

When the dessert arrived it looked pretty much like empanadas sitting on a bed of cream....... I took the spoon and cut open the empanada, melted chocolate starts to ooze out. I took a spoonful of the chocolate and it was very sweet. But mix it with the coco creme and the sweetness is reduced.

I was very amazed at how simple the dessert looked and yet we both felt like we were in chocolate heaven. (being a non-dessert person, this one blew me away)
